What is Afterdrop?
- Afterdrop is a continued drop in core body temperature after removal from a cold environment.
- It occurs when cold blood from the extremities returns to the core too quickly during rewarming.
- This can cause a dangerous secondary dip in core temperature, potentially fatal if unmanaged.
Key Points:
- Cold exposure causes peripheral vasoconstriction, preserving core warmth.
- Rapid or incorrect rewarming reverses this, pushing cold blood inward.
- Core temperature may drop further during initial rewarming if not done properly.
REWARMING PROTOCOL: WHAT TO DO
DO NOT:
- Use hot packs or direct heat on arms or legs.
- Massage extremities.
- Place individual in hot water immediately.
DO:
- Rewarm from the core outward (focus on chest, back, and neck).
- Use passive rewarming: dry clothing, warm blankets, body heat.
- Keep head and neck well insulated.
- Monitor vital signs continuously during and after rewarming.
